The names of many traditional Chinese musical instruments (especially those with two syllables/characters, which make no sense if attempting to translate the characters literally) are phonetic borrowings from the names of these instruments in non-Chinese languages--often Turkic or Indo-European--when those instruments were borrowed from cultures living to China's west.
