Etymology[edit]

@Tooironic, Justinrleung, Suzukaze-c, エリック・キィ, RcAlex36, anyone else I've missed -- can any of you tell if this term was in use in Chinese prior to 1872? My Japanese sources don't mention anything about a Chinese borrowing, whereas the term's date of first appearance in Japanese is suggestive of either a repurposing of an older Chinese term of different sense, or possibly of a new coinage in Japanese.
