Derivation[edit]

Obviously, this is not a direct descendant of *smerwą, but the question is whether this goes back to Proto-Germanic, and what the form and derivation would be. By comparison with other words with *-þrą, it seems to me to attach straight to the PIE stem (without a thematic vowel). In that case, it might be PGmc *smeruþrą and perhaps pre-Germanic, but if the derivation is late, might it perhaps be something like *smerwaþrą (can this suffix attach to a noun??) or perhaps *smirwiþrą, from *smirwijaną. What do you think, @KIeio, @CodeCat, @Ivan Štambuk? – Krun (talk) 15:03, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Gothic does not syncopate medial syllables, so this would have to have -þr- directly with no intervening vowel. —CodeCat 16:14, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
