Past participle

[edit]

@Mnemosientje So I’ve found this anomaly when creating the page for πŒ²πŒ°π†πŒΏπŒ»πŒ»πŒ°π…πŒ΄πŒΉπƒπŒΎπŒ°πŒ½ (gafullaweisjan) which I ended up not creating. Apparently, the Past participle is only attested once in Luke 1:1 as πŒ²πŒ°π†πŒΏπŒ»πŒ»πŒ°π…πŒ΄πŒΉπƒπŒΉπŒ³π‰πŒ½πƒ (gafullaweisidōns) (Weak Feminine, either the Genitive Singular, Nominative or accusative plural). I'm not sure why the past participle is written with "d" instead of "ΓΎ". So I want to ask you about your opinion on the matter. πŒ·πŒ»πŒΏπŒ³πŒ°π…πŒΉπŒ²πƒ πŒ°πŒ»πŒ°π‚πŒ΄πŒΉπŒΊπŒΉπŒ²πŒ²πƒ (talk) 01:46, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Holodwig21 Hey, that's entirely regular so you can go ahead and create the entries. The <ΓΎ> ([ΞΈ]) before an <s> (as found in the participle πŒ²πŒ°π†πŒΏπŒ»πŒ»πŒ°π…πŒ΄πŒΉπƒπŒΉπŒΈπƒ (gafullaweisiΓΎs)) often becomes voiced <d> ([Γ°]) in intervocalic position. Compare the inflection of πŒΌπŒ΄πŒ»πŒΉπŒΈπƒ (mΔ“liΓΎs) or any other similar past participle in Category:Gothic past participles. Happens in nouns too, e.g. πŒ°π‚πŒ±πŒ°πŒΉπŒΈπƒ (arbaiΓΎs). This is because these -ΓΎs endings were originally *-daz/*-diz, the reduction of the -az/-iz part to an unvoices -s causes the [Γ°] to devoice as well in the nominative singular in which form it directly precedes the unvoiced s, but in other forms of the paradigm the original voiced form is visible. β€” Mnemosientje (t Β· c) 13:18, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
