Etymology

[edit]

@Poketalker, the prefixing element (sa) may not be the "early" one here. See also https://sakura-paris.org/dict/%E6%96%B0%E6%98%8E%E8%A7%A3%E5%9B%BD%E8%AA%9E%E8%BE%9E%E5%85%B8/exact/%E3%81%95, which includes the following definition:

[二]〔雅〕 その状態について何ほどか強調することを表わす。
「―迷ふ・―鋭トし〔= 『聡サトい』 の雅語形〕」

I also wonder if this might be related to the さ・し・そ cluster of roots with an underlying sense of "the way something is", as in さま or しか or そう.

A sense of "early" seems semantically odd in the context of this word.

For now, I'll tweak the etym. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 21:56, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
