Gender and Example were unattested and surely wrong.

1. Duden states it's feminine ("Da­me, die [..] Substantiv, feminin [...] 3. a. Brettspiel [...]").
2. "Er spielt ein gutes Dame." is a fictional example, sounds awkward and could very well be incorrect. google books has 0 results for "gutes Dame".
3. The gender of Schach is partly revealed through "beim Schach" (google finds enough results) and "das Blitzschach" (google finds a few results).
   "beim Dame" sounds wrong, and google results for that have "wie beim Dame-Spiel", "beim Dame-, Mühle- oder Schachspiel", "beim Dame- oder Schachspiel", "beim Dame-Spielen", "beim Dame, Halma oder Schachspielen" (incorrectly for "beim Dame-, Halma- oder Schachspielen"), "beim Dame spielen" (incorrectly for "beim Damespielen" or "beim Dame-Spielen"), "beim Dome", "beim Darme" and the like.
   "bei Dame" gets a few correct results: "Während Schach mit 2x16 Figuren gespielt wird, sind es bei Dame und Baschni je 2x12 und bei Laska 2x11 Spielfiguren", "Ich habe bei Dame, Mühle und Schach übrigens fast immer verloren", "Bei Dame oder Schach können die Spielfiguren bewegt werden", "ein leeres Feld, wie bei Dame,". However, this doesn't necessarily reveal gender: "bei Schach" and "bei [masculine proper noun]" get results too.
   "Schlagdame", which doesn't properly attest the gender of "Dame", does at least imply that "Dame" is feminine: "Eine vielfach beliebt gewordene Abart des Damespiels ist die Schlagdame, für welche [...]". Other results which imply feminine gender: "um englische, deutsche und Schlagdame spielen zu können" (short for "um englische Dame, deutsche Dame und Schlagdame spielen zu können" and thus implies feminine gender for "Dame"). Results with feminine gender: "die deutsche Dame", "[bei] der englischen Dame" and similar (in [1], [2], [3]). This does also show, that the word can be used together with adjectives - though not necessarily like in the fictional example "Er spielt ein gutes Dame" or with changed gender "Er spielt eine gute Dame".

The two points of your lengthy study are (1.) that you've attested it as feminine ("englische Dame") and (2.) that you find the neuter gender awkward. The information was added by another native speaker, so there are different usages then. We agree that the gender is doubtful because the word is mostly used in contexts where the gender remains unrevealed. Here's an attestation for the neuter gender: [4]. User "Lars Larsen" says: Beim Dame z.B. ist ein Spieler 9 Mal in den Topslist, and then: Beim Dame muss man sich nicht warmspielen.
