As an "in country" (1968/69) USArmy Vietnam vet, I can confirm the widespread use of this acronym. — This comment was unsigned.

It has the ring of truth to it. We could (should !) probably get quotations from some book to illustrate it, but it won't be deleted. We try to have widespread slang, including military slang.
