Hal

[edit]

The official etymology states that this relates to hallr which in modern Norwegian is helle, a flat stone (typically used for walking surfaces). I would think that an equally credible possibility that should be discussed would be that Hal is derived from hall (identical meaning in both English and Norwegian). "Guardian of the hall" could be interpreted as "guardian of Valhalla", thus the bearer of the name carries the title of he who guards the realm of the gods. This has probably been discussed previously and it would be most interesting to obtain some references to such studies. __meco 08:21, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
