Slon[edit]

Serbian word for elephant. Slavic word also. Elephant are known to have lived in southern Europe, around 4500 years ago, according to well known archaeological findings from Balkan. Elephants "came back" to Europe not before mid 16. century, along with Portuguese explorers. What is very interesting, is that the word "elephant" is used in all modern european languages, except for the languages of Slavic origin, since they all use Serbian word "slon", again with additional vocals here and there. Nice story, but you're getting things mixed up. To start with, the entry is at slon- Wiktionary is case-sensitive. Second, you have the timelines scrambled: the word for elephant goes back to before there were separate Slavic languages, let alone Serbian, and it really doesn't matter what was in southern Europe 4,500 years ago because there were no Slavs there at that time. The entry for Proto-Slavic *slonъ gives a few possible origins, including a couple that involve Turkic languages as either source or intermediary. Chuck Entz (talk) 05:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
