Came here from reddit discussion. The Link to the German Duden translation is wrong. Ausrotten has no German translation as shown under entry 2. It does not mean uproot, it never has and is an almost montypythonesque mistranslation.

Well, you should be careful not to make a montypythonesque fool of yourself. Not only does this sense exist, it is in fact the original meaning, "ausrotten" being related to "roden" (to uproot, clear, make arable). I quote to you Ezekiel 17:9 from Luther's Bible: "Ja man wird seine Wurzel ausrotten und seine Früchte abreißen." King James: "Shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof?" Still very common in contemporary parlance is "mit Stumpf und Stiel ausrotten" (to extirpate root and branch, literally: bulb and stem).
