When did "ballpark" become a verb? Can someone provide an early citation?

Etymology of figurative sense

For us Europeans it might be useful to explain the figurative sense a bit more in terms of where it came from. Does it have something to do with hitting in baseball? Is "in the ballpark" an expression in baseball? But I thought that hitting the ball out of the stadium was a good thing, is it not? (Most of us really don't know the first thing about baseball. Usage in Australia (and elsewhere)

The term "ballpark figure" seems to be well understood in Australia, AFAIK (I am not a native speaker). Could somebody attest to this? If true, I'd suggest to extend or (if also common in the UK, in particular) drop the limitation "US". --CRau080 (talk) 15:30, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
