   Any sign that the out of kilter sense is related to kater-corner or kitty-corner? AFAICan recall they mean diagonally across (as opposed to falling in a neat line?...)

My impression from several other sources is that "something sideways or diagonal" might be the primary and preferred meaning. For example, consider --Filll (talk) 17:44, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
