Definition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary

These numbered etymology things really annoy me. They don't mean anything useful. If there are different etymolgoes then just put them in. Hard-coding numbers is not a good idea. Real dictionaries number the senses, not the etymologies.

Now in thise case it's even worse because there is only one single etymology for the various senses here. They all come from Greek to Latin and on through Old English to English. Different senses have been picked up along the way.

A real dictionary might include a year and a quote from the first use of the word in each sense, but that is something entirely different.

If you don't know how many etymologies a particular word has, then don't just guess and put in arbitrary numbers. It makes Wiktionary look like a joke. Hippietrail 03:49, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)
