configuration (n) -- (electronics) A particular set of values for customizable variables for a hardware or software component that adapt that component for a particular use. Also the process of customizing the settings for an application.

configure (v) -- (electronics) To set the customizable variables for a hardware or software component to adapt that component for a particular use.

For example, movable shorting bars are sometimes used to set the address or data rate on a modem. The particular placement of all the shorting bars for a specific application is its configuration. A technician establishes the correct position by configuring the component.
