  • Only reason I ask is because the use of S to disambiguate /e~ɛ/ from /ə/ is something normally associated with later attempts to regulate French spelling. That said, it must have predated the introduction of accent marks, because after that all the Ss were unnecessary and disappeared (teste > tête, esglise > église – (deprecated template usage) est being the one famous exception). Doing a quick search, I can only find it in Rutebeuf. He was a pretty prolific author, and used this consistently, so I'd object to it being deleted. Mglovesfun (talk) 22:40, 24 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
