Dated sense just added by an anon: "To estimate the velocity of a boat or ship in knots by casting overboard the knotted line to whose end is attached the lead and thereafter counting the knots in the line as it goes aft along the side boards of the vessel." It sounds authoritative, but I can't readily find any corroboration. Nothing in OED, Webster, or dictionary.com supports this sense and this site suggests otherwise. -- WikiPedant 04:22, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
