I was looking for early instances of "goal" and found these in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare[1] (1609):

1:

Our praises are our wages; you may ride's
    With one soft kiss a thousand furlongs ere
    With spur we heat an acre. But to th' goal:
    My last good deed was to entreat his stay;
    What was my first? It has an elder sister,
    Or I mistake you.

2:

What, girl! though grey
    Do something mingle with our younger brown, yet ha' we
    A brain that nourishes our nerves, and can
    Get goal for goal of youth.

Neither mean what is currently meant by "goal", probably. There is also "goale" here: [2] (1591). --NoToleranceForIntolerance (talk) 16:02, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
