gongo is a word used by puertorrican poet Luis Palés Matos, in his poem "Majestad Negra". Where he says "meneos cachondos que el gongo cuaja en ríos de azúcar y de melaza (Translates roughly into: sensual movements from the rolling mills that extracted the juice from sugarcane for the gongo to transform into sugar and molasses). There is an implication that the word was used locally in Puerto Rico to name the iron pot in which sugarcane juice was boiled for evaporation and conversion into molasses and precipitation of raw sugar in the early days of black slavery in the island.
