Def #1[edit]

Is there a good way to indicate for L2 learners of English that def #1 is always progressive? e.g. you dont say (as far as i know) *He had me on, even in the past tense where the short form is often acceptable for other verbs that demand an -ing in the present (compare "I drove" vs "Im driving").
