As far as the singular / plural status of this word, different dictionaries have varying views:

  • M-W online says: noun plural but singular or plural in construction
  • Encarta online dictionary has a "noun" entry with the note (takes a singular or plural verb); and a "plural noun" entry with the note that it's formal.
  • Collins Word Exchange has two senses which are listed under their "histrionic" entry. The first has the note (plural); the second has the notes (Rare) and (plural, functioning as singular)
  • AHD also has two senses. One has (used with a pl. verb); The other has (used with a sing. or pl. verb)
