Etymology[edit]

A couple of alternate etymological explanations found on Google Books:

  • Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable by Elizabeth Knowles (2006) - "the idea here is of being a spectator at a boxing match."
  • English English by Norman W. Schur (1980) - "The ropes forming the prize ring in the old days were not attached to posts but were held by spectators, thus forming the ring."
