Orthography and deletion

@Mahagaja: The user (@-sche) that created the entry marked the entry for "Check orthography", and since I (and I believe others if they were/are working with Wiyot) handle the Teeter (1964) orthography, this page doesn't satisfy - it's just another phonetic transcription. I've set it under "alternative spelling" just like I'd do any other non-orthographic entry, because this avoids duplicate entries until it's deleted, should I stop doing that? @Thadh: I don't know. For a massively LDL language like Wiyot, I feel like if a spelling, even a phonetic transcription, is attested in print anywhere, it does no harm for us to have an entry for it, even if all it says is "alternative spelling of" the standard spelling. —Mahāgaja · talk 13:13, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

@Mahagaja: I think a secondary source isn't something a user would use for the language, but I'm fine with keeping the entry as just a soft redirect with no reference to it from the main entry, if you (both?) agree with it. Thadh (talk) 13:16, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

@Thadh: I agree for languages with a fairly large literature and a well-established orthography (like Irish, for which there are also secondary sources that use phonetic transcriptions that I would never create entries for), but for Native American languages – especially very small ones with virtually no literature – there actually is a tolerably good chance that people will be using things like linguistics articles and Ph.D. dissertations as their source of information on the language. —Mahāgaja · talk 13:33, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
