This is not just an alteration of lol. This word is unique in the fact it is only used when laughing at the expense of another.
A use of the word is "I did it for the lulz!" referring to the act of harm, disruption, or general pranks and shenanigans to a group, someone or something. These acts are commonly used to offend or shock viewed and readers.
