Part of speech

[edit]

It is hard to determine what part of speech this word belongs to. I wrote adjective because it resembles "szabad" in many ways

muszáj megcsinálni - milyen? - muszáj
muszáj voltam ... - milyen?

I don't think muszáj can be a noun. I don't hear "Ez egy muszáj". It could be a verb too, but it does nothing a verb usually does. It barely takes any suffixes. There is no "muszájt", "muszájsz"... But the usage is indeed verb-like.

According to Országh, it can be a noun in these sentences: muszájból tette - he did it under pressure; nagy úr a muszáj - necessity knows no law. In Országh, it's a verb, too, if you replace "kell" in the above expressions, that's a verb, too. --Panda10 22:52, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
