-r after myco-

[edit]

Where does the -r after myco-, before rhiza, come from? Is that just how Greek behaves? 2001:1C02:1990:A900:81B8:B1AD:ED4D:FA4F 14:58, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

The extra r looks like what you would get if the first part ended in a consonant. For instance glycyrrhiza comes from an Ancient Greek compound of γλῠκῠ́ς (glukús, sweet) and ῥίζα (rhíza, root), with the -ς assimilating to the ῥ-. Unfortunately for that theory, the only Ancient Greek word that would make sense is μῠ́κης (múkēs), with the wrong vowel. Chuck Entz (talk) 00:29, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
