- The extra r looks like what you would get if the first part ended in a consonant. For instance glycyrrhiza comes from an Ancient Greek compound of γλῠκῠ́ς (glukús, “sweet”) and ῥίζα (rhíza, “root”), with the -ς assimilating to the ῥ-. Unfortunately for that theory, the only Ancient Greek word that would make sense is μῠ́κης (múkēs), with the wrong vowel. Chuck Entz (talk) 00:29, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
