Alternate spelling?[edit]

Is nayée an alternate spelling? 71.66.97.228 04:58, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No. Most people are not accustomed to writing Navajo, so they often leave necessary glottal stops out, or put them in where they don’t have to be, or neglect to show long vowels, or put different tones. Nayée is not an acceptable alternate spelling. —Stephen (Talk) 08:08, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Additional definition?[edit]

Can this also mean "monster"? 71.66.97.228 04:33, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the naayééʼ were monsters in the Navajo creation myth. The naayééʼ lived in the fourth and final world. The Diné journeyed from the first world to the second, the third, then the fourth, and the monsters were already in the fourth world. Changing Woman (Asdzą́ą́ Nádleehé) was the first human born in the fourth world and then she gave birth to Naayééʼ Neizghání and Tóbájíshchíní, the Hero Twins who killed all the naayééʼ. —Stephen (Talk) 22:22, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
