@Flamen pluvialis How are they “dead references”? They are current dictionaries. You were falsifying them by rewriting them. I am not refusing anything, rather you seem to be. J3133 (talk) 16:16, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I was talking about the links in the etymology sections. If you clicked on the "pēnumbra" you'd just stay on the same page because there was no Latin entry for pēnumbra. As for the falsification, there is none. If you, for instance, look up the Latin word "sēta" on Wiktionary, you'll be informed that it's a variant of saeta, the main lemma. e is a later spelling and/or pronunciation variant of ae. But this doesn't mean we have to lemmatize both. If we are sure that ae is primary and original, we prefer this variant. Apparently the word "penumbra" was first invented when the spelling of "paene" commonly was with an e, so it makes sense that English Dictionaries cite this form. But how are you going to explain to someone that penumbra is the result of composing paene and umbra? For the sake of consistency it's definitely necessary that the main Latin lemma be "paenumbra", however I admit that the e spelling deserves a mention too, not only as a spelling variant, but rather as its own section within the penumbra page. @Flamen pluvialis The falsification was that the Online Etymology Dictionary states “from Modern Latin penumbra”. You changed this to “paenumbra”. This is not allowed because this is not what the cited reference states. Pēnumbra instead of paenumbra is stated in other dictionaries (and hence we should follow this) because that form is the origin. Re “how are you going to explain to someone that penumbra is the result of composing paene and umbra?”: the dictionaries seem to be doing this, with no problems. What did you mean by “dead”? J3133 (talk) 17:13, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
That there was no entry for the word, at least for the language that was indicated right before Flamen pluvialis (talk) 17:17, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I suppose you did not mean the “references”. J3133 (talk) 17:22, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I meant the link. Flamen pluvialis (talk) 17:32, 12 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
