Pronunciation[edit]

Anyone know why it's not either pronounced "Ray-dish" or spelled with two Ds, as per convention? --66.195.208.240 04:56, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Because it came from French? Fugyoo 11:37, 18 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps it is pronounced "raydish" in some old-fashioned dialects or at least it may have been. Based on the Middle English "radiche" such a pronunciation would be possible. For almost any word there existed very different dialectal forms until ultimately one of them established itself (apart from the words where different forms still coexist like "either"). But when it comes to orthography there is really little regularity in English. The spelling "raddish" can be attested from Early Modern English even to the present. If there's any particular reason why it hasn't become the standard, it is probably the influence of Latin "radix". 84.63.31.124 00:53, 8 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
