I speak with a GA accent, and I tend to pronounce this as /ˈɹi.li/. 22:45, 11 March 2010 (UTC) — This unsigned comment was added by 70.187.89.240 (talk) at 22:45, 11 March 2010 (UTC).[reply]

is this pronunciation common with a GA accent, and if so, should an edit be made to reflect this? edited 02:51, 25 June 2010 (UTC) — This unsigned comment was added by 70.187.92.164 (talk) at 02:51, 25 June 2010 (UTC).[reply]

According to Oxford's Advanced Learner's Dictionary [1], /ˈriːəli/ is the standard pronunciation in BrE (alongside /ˈrɪəli/). This entry, however, only mentions the pronunciation /ˈɹɪəli/ for BrE. --77.249.41.192 22:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Translation from Spanish[edit]

"Really!?" is the best translation from Spanish "En serio..." (seriously). It means: "you truly mean it, don't you?". It is a long exclamation to punctuate conversations where some measure of doubt as to the interlocutor statements is disregarded, taking the statement as a truth value worthy of being considered. Directly from Spanish, "en serio", means that you ought to doubt... (but take literally), so the interlocutor ought to make further statements to prove the value of the statement, or you will just admit it as true unconditionally, even if you do not "truly believe it" initially. "Seriously" conveys more the sense of regarding the consequences; "really" has more the sense of suspension of disbelief requiring further proof should consequences would arise from assigning a truth value to the statement.

When used as punctutation in speech directed to an interlocutor it has the meaning, from translation, of asking the interlocutor to NOT disbelieve your statement, while you will (can) add further proof but will not, which resolves down to an ellipsis in speech to avoid branching it.

There is a measure of doubt, but also a bigger measure of acceptance.

Then it can be used as a meaning doubt, pure, when used as an unasked answer to a statement. djb

I don’t understand what point you are trying to make. If you are simply discussing the meaning and usage of en serio, then this would be better placed at Talk:en serio. —Stephen (Talk) 20:22, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
