Slang

[edit]

@WordyAndNerdy I noticed that you've labelled this slang although it is not actually used that way by any (real-life) people. Do you think we should have a label/category for (derogatory?) fictional slang? (cf dirtsider, droid, spacedog, muggle etc.) Ioaxxere (talk) 19:14, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

The "slang" label was applied to knife ear (now deprecated) by its original creator. I personally wouldn't have labelled that term as slang. But I didn't want to unilaterally override the application of the "slang" label to it. Plus I wanted to be consistent when creating an entry for the co-ordinate term round-ear. I think there could definitely be utility in having a category along the lines of "fictional derogatory terms" etc. I hesitated on labelling this as "offensive" or "ethnic slur" as well. It technically does fit that bill from an in-universe perspective in most of the citations. But it's not an actual real-world slur or offensive term. Thus it seemed inappropriate to label it as such. Perhaps we could have a "fictional slurs" or "fictional offensive terms" category too? I don't know. This could be opening a can of worms. Might be better handled by a usage note explaining that this is usually offensive in the fictional contexts in which it is used. WordyAndNerdy (talk) 00:15, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
