Moved from article:

From the Dutch composite word Rugzak, made up from the nouns rug (back) and zak (bag)

Both Online Etymology Dictionary and American Heritage Dictionary give the etymology as German not Dutch. Rmhermen 05:53, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Alternate spellings[edit]

Is 'rucsac' a valid spelling? 500,000 hits on Google (versus 4.5m for 'rucksack'). I've seen it used in adverts from Tiso.
