Buttocks?

[edit]

I thought that this isn't offensive and refers to facial cheeks not buttocks. It's an old-fashioned and perhaps patronising term for a woman, not so different from sweetheart except that can refer to a man or a woman. Renard Migrant (talk) 16:04, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

I suspect it's a double entendre that plays on the contrast between innocent and flowery references in poetry to "those sweet cheeks" and the mildly vulgar reference to buttocks. Perhaps at one time it referred to facial cheeks, but there's no mistaking the overtone of sly vulgarity in modern usage. I don't see anything resembling a nickname in Google Books before the 1970's, which would be consistent with that interpretation. Chuck Entz (talk) 17:26, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
