[edit]Tagabukid is not hillbilly or mountain dweller in Tagalog. The word "bukid" is the Tagalog word for "farm". It then means literally "belonging to a farm" or "one who lives in a farm". As often used, tagabukid refers to people who live in the country away from the city or in farming areas. The Tagalog for mountain is "bundok". Hence, "tagabundok" refers to one who comes from the mountain, a more diminutive word for tagabukid.
In Bicol, and perhaps in Visayan, is where "bukid" literally means "mountain". In these regions, it then means, "belonging to the mountain" or from the mountain. In Bicol, the word for farm is "uma", from the farm is "tigauma".
In both cases, referring to someone as "tagabukid" means one who is naïve or unaccustomed of city or suburban culture, a more diminutive word for "probinsiano".
