Any evidence for def. 1?[edit]

Def 1 sounds logical, but that may be just folk etymology. The dictionaries I've consulted show only def. 2. E.g., http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/talesman :

1

a person added to a jury usually from among bystanders to make up a deficiency in the available number of jurors

2

a member of a large pool of persons called for jury duty from which jurors are selected.

This meaning would be related to "tally", meaning "count".
