Hi, Can anybody tell me if triple and treble are equivalent? Would you use them in the same contexts? Like, you say a triple Whisky but not a treble Whisky do you?, also you have treble 5 for 555, could you also say triple 5? Thanks

Yes, they are basically the same word (both from Latin, but one came to us via French). They can have slightly different connotations but they are generally interchangeable. Widsith 14:28, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if originally, triple (obviously deriving from triplus) and treble (not originally anything to do with three) were confused, and treble only has its triple meaning today because of usage? Does anyone have any evidence either way of this? (skewwhiffy, 11.42am GMT 2007-3-10)

No, it's definitely all the same word. See w:Treble (sound) and w:Boy soprano#Origins for an explanation how the musical meaning came about. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 19:41, 2 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
