Yes, this is a Middle English spelling. But there is no clear consensus yet on how to deal with ME forms – should they be labelled as a separate language or not? I prefer not, particularly since this spelling outlasted the ME period and is found rather later as well. ‘Depart or separate’ is an old meaning of twin which survives in Scottish usage.
