Usage

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Richard Allestree's work The Gentlemans Calling (1st edition, 1660). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |chapter= – if quoting from the preface, specify |chapter=The Preface. As the preface is not paginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the page number assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=c3OUb2VT3uUC&pg=PP13, specify |page=13.
• |1= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the name of the section (I–IX) or other part of the work quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.

• |section= – mandatory in some cases: in most cases if the page number is specified, the template can determine the name of the section quoted from. However, the template is unable to do so if page 8 or 12 is specified, in which case the section number must be specified in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |section=I.
• |subchapter= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the "Private Devotions" at the end of the work, if page 171 is specified, the template is unable to determine the name of the subchapter quoted from. Use this parameter to specify either |subchapter=A Confession or |subchapter=A Thanksgiving.
• |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
