Usage

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Barrow's work Dictionarium Polygraphicum (1st edition, 1735, 2 volumes). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

• Volume I (A–H).
• Volume II (I–S).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |1= or |entry= – the entry or headword in the work to be quoted from. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry. The template automatically displays the entry in capital letters as in the work; to override this and use Wikitext to format the entry differently, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
• |2= or |url= – mandatory in some cases: as the work is not paginated, the URL of the webpage that the template should link to must be manually specified, like this: |url=https://archive.org/details/dictionariumpoly01barr/page/n10/mode/1up. The parameter must be specified for the template to link to the online version of the work.
• |volume= – the template attempts to automatically determine whether volume I or II of the work is quoted from based on the first letter of the entry. If the volume number is not being determined correctly, manually specify the volume number using |volume=I or |volume=II.
• |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
