Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy (1st edition, 1621). As this edition is currently not available online, the template can be used to link to an online version of the 2nd edition (1624) of this work at the Internet Archive.

The template may also be used to quote from an online version of the 5th edition (1638) of the work at Google Books.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition= – to quote from the 5th edition (1638) of the work, use |edition=5th. To quote from the 2nd edition (1624), use |edition=2nd or omit this parameter.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the title of the “chapter” or most specific portion (partition, section, member, or subsection) quoted from.
  • |2= or |partition= – the partition quoted from in Arabic numerals, either |partition=1, |partition=2 or |partition=3.
  • |3= or |section= – the section quoted from in Arabic numerals.
  • |4= or |member= – the member quoted from in Arabic numerals.
  • |subsection= – the subsection quoted from in Arabic numerals.
  • |5= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template create an automatic link to the online version of the work.
  • |6= or |url=mandatory in some cases: as the page numbering of the work is erratic, you must manually specify the URL of the page quoted from, like this: |url=https://archive.org/stream/2319035R.nlm.nih.gov/2319035R#page/n76/mode/1up. If quoting from the 5th edition (1638) of the work, omit this parameter.
  • |7=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
