Usage
[edit]This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from William Congreve's work The Double Dealer (1735); the 1st edition (London: […] Jacob Tonson, […], 1694; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books.
Parameters
[edit]The template takes the following parameters:
|chapter=
– if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give this parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value | Result |
---|---|
Dryden | To My Dear Friend Mr. Congreve, on His Comedy, Call’d, The Double-Dealer |
Epilogue | Epilogue, Spoken by Mrs. Mountford |
Epistle Dedicatory | To the Right Honourable Charles Montague, One of the Lords of the Treasury |
Prologue | Prologue, Spoken by Mrs. Bracegirdle |
- As the epistle dedicatory and the tribute by John Dryden are unpaginated, use
|1=
or|page=
to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL ishttps://books.google.com/books?id=PAkJAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA5
, specify|page=5
. (The prologue and epilogue are also unpaginated, but the template is able to determine the URL to link to.)
|act=
– mandatory in some cases: in most cases the template will determine the act number quoted from, as shown below. However, if page 43 or 87 is quoted from, the act number must be manually specified in uppercase Roman numerals, like this:|act=II
.
Act I (pages 15–27) |
Act II (pages 28–43) |
Act III (pages 43–62) |
Act IV (page 63–87) |
Act V (pages 87–107) |
|1=
or|scene=
– mandatory: the scene number of the play quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals.|2=
or|page=
, or|pages=
– mandatory in some cases: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:- Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11
. - You must also use
|pageref=
to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
- Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this:
- This parameter must be specified for the template to link to the online version of the book.
|3=
,|text=
, or|passage=
– the passage to be quoted.|brackets=
– use|brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
