Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from William Davenant's work The Siege of Rhodes (1st edition, 1st part, 1659; and 2nd part, 1663). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

(Both parts are in the same file.)

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |part=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 2nd part (1663), specify |part=2. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st part (1659).
  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
1st part (1659)
The Scene before the First Entry The Scene before the First Entry
To the Reader To the Reader (written 17 August 1656 [Julian calendar])
2nd part (1663)
Epilogue Epilogue
Epistle Dedicatory To the Right Honourable the Earl of Clarendon Lord High Chancellor of England, &c.
Prologue Prologue
Apart from "The Scene before the First Entry" in the 1st part, as the above chapters are unpaginated use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/bim_early-english-books-1641-1700_the-siege-of-rhodes-_davenant-sir-william_1659/page/n2/mode/1up, specify |page=2.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the entry number (1st–5th) in the 1st part, and the act (I–V) and scene numbers in the 2nd part, quoted from and to link to the online version of the work.
1st entry
pages 3–6
2nd entry
pages 7–13
3rd entry
pages 14–21
4th entry
pages 22–28
5th entry
pages 29–39
  • |act= and |scene=mandatory in some cases: the 2nd part is divided into acts and scenes. In most cases, if the page number is specified the template can determine the act and scene numbers. However, if it is unable to do so, |act= must be used to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, and |scene= the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=II; |scene=i. (As the scenes are not actually numbered, the scene numbers are indicated in brackets.)
Act I
pages 1–10
Act II
pages 11–22
Act III
pages 22–33
Act IV
pages 33–47
Act V
pages 48–61
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
