Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Arthur Conan Doyle's work The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1952); the 1st edition (London: John Murray, 1927; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work (contents) at the Internet Archive.

(This is an imperfect copy – pages after page 318 are missing. Use a better copy of the work if one becomes available.)

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template to determine the name of the story quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
Story First page number
The Adventure of the Illustrious Client (8 November 1924) page 11
The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier (16 October 1926) page 47
The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone (October 1921) page 75
The Adventure of the Three Gables (18 September 1926) page 98
The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire (January 1924) page 122
The Adventure of the Three Garridebs (25 October 1924) page 145
The Problem of Thor Bridge (February–March 1922) page 168
The Adventure of the Creeping Man (March 1923) page 203
The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane (27 November 1926) page 232
The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger (22 January 1927) page 259
The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place (5 March 1927) page 275
The Adventure of the Retired Colourman (18 December 1926) page 299
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
