Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Arthur Conan Doyle's work The Land of Mist (A. L. Burt version, 1926; and Project Gutenberg Australia version April 2019); the 1st edition (London: Hutchinson & Co., 1926; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg Australia:

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |chapter=mandatory:
    • If quoting from the main part of the work, the chapter number quoted from in Arabic numerals, from |chapter=1 to |chapter=17. The template will indicate the name of the chapter.
    • If quoting from one of the appendices of the work indicated in the second column of the following table, the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
note1 Note on Chapter II: Clairvoyance in Spiritualistic Churches
note2 Note on Chapter IX: Earthbound Spirits
note3 Note on Chapter X: Rescue Circles
note4
  • A. L. Burt version: Note on Chapter XII (missing from the Gutenberg version)
  • Gutenberg version: Note on Chapter XII[I]: Dr Maupuis’ Experiment
note5
  • A. L. Burt version only: Chapter XIII: Dr Maupuis’ Experiment
In the Gutenberg version, this parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=11–12.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the A. L. Burt version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
