Usage[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Henry James's work The Portrait of a Lady (1st edition, 1881; and New York edition, 1908). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |edition=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the New York edition (1908), specify |edition=NY.
  • |volume=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the New York edition, the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |volume=I or |volume=II.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the chapter number of the work quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, or the string "Preface".
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic numerals or, if quoting from the preface in the New York edition, in lowercase Roman numerals. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.

If no page number is specified, the template links to the Project Gutenberg version of the New York edition of the work.

  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the book.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
