Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Cotton Mather's work Magnalia Christi Americana: Or, the Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from Its First Planting in the Year 1620. unto the Year of Our Lord, 1698 (1st edition, 1702). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |author= – if the part of the work quoted from is by someone other than Mather, use this parameter to specify the author's name.
  • |1= or |book= – mandatory: the book number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |book=I to |book=VII.
  • |2= or |chapter=, and/or |chaptername= –
    • if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give |2= or |chapter= the value indicated in the first column:

As these chapters are unpaginated, use |3= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/magnaliachristia00math/page/n8/mode/1up, specify |page=8.

  • |3= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine, in book V, the part number (1st–4th) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • The pagination starts from 1 in each book.
  • In book IV, page numbers 1–124 are not used; the text is unaffected.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
