Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Isaac Newton's work Opticks: Or, A Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light (1st edition, 1704; and 4th edition, 1730). It can be used to link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

1st edition (1704)
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
    • If quoting from the advertisement, "Enumeratio Linearum Tertii Ordinis", or "Tractatus de Quadratura Curvarum", specify |chapter=Advertisement, |chapter=Enumeratio Linearum Tertii Ordinis, or |chapter=Tractatus de Quadratura Curvarum respectively. If one of these chapters is not specified, the template assumes that one of the chapters of "Opticks" is quoted from.
    • As the advertisement is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/opticksortreatis00newt/page/n8/mode/1up, specify |page=8.
  • |book= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from "Opticks", specify the book number quoted from in Arabic numerals, from |book=1 to |book=3. This parameter must be specified as the pagination of the work restarts from 1 from book 2.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine, in books 1 and 2 of "Opticks", the part of the work quoted from, and link to the online version of the work.
  • |termlang= – the chapters "Enumeratio Linearum Tertii Ordinis" and "Tractatus de Quadratura Curvarum" are written in Latin. If quoting from these chapters in a Latin entry, specify |termlang=la.
4th edition (1730)
  • |edition= – mandatory: if quoting from the 4th edition, specify |edition=4th. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition.
  • |1= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
    • If quoting from one of the three advertisements, specify |chapter=Advertisement I, |chapter=Advertisement II, or |chapter=Advertisement to This Fourth Edition respectively. If one of these chapters is not specified, the template assumes that one of the chapters of "Opticks" is quoted from.
    • If "Advertisement I" is quoted from, as it is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/opticksortreatis1730newt/page/n4/mode/1up, specify |page=4. (The other advertisements are also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL to be linked to.)
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the book (I–III) and part of the book quoted from, and link to the online version of the work.
Both editions
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
