Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from an English translation of Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas's works known as the Semaines by Josuah Sylvester entitled Du Bartas His Deuine Weekes and Workes (3rd edition, 1611); the 1st edition (London: [] Humfrey Lownes, 1608; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

The book also contains other works by Du Bartas, and works by other authors.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

Du Bartas's Weeks
  • |day= and |part=mandatory:
    • If quoting from the "First Week", specify in Arabic numerals the day quoted from, from |day=1 to |day=7.
    • If quoting from the "Second Week", specify in Arabic numerals the day quoted from (from |day=1 to |day=4, as Du Bartas did not complete the 5th to 7th days), and the part quoted from (from |part=1 to |part=4).
  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the dedications in the "Second Week", use this parameter to specify the name of the dedication.
The Historie of Iudith
  • |part=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from "The Historie of Iudith, in Forme of a Poeme" which is separately paginated from the rest of the work, specify |part=Judith.
  • |book= – in most cases, if the page number quoted from is specified using |1= or |page=, the template can determine the book number (1st–6th) quoted from. The template is unable to do so if page 30 is quoted from, in which case either |book=2 or |book=3 must be specified.
All parts of the work
  • |author= – the name of the author of a part of the work (for example, one of the dedications addressed to Sylvester), if different from the one determined by the template.
  • |prelim= or |preliminary= – the name of a preliminary chapter of the work on an unnumbered page. To have the template link to the chapter, note the following:
    • If the URL is in the format https://books.google.com/books?id=ECIxPAf-JU4C&pg=PP12, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL, like this: |page=12.
    • If the URL is in some other format, use |url= to specify the URL of the webpage to be linked to.
  • |canto=, |stanza=, and/or |section= – if the part of the work quoted from is divided into cantos and/or stanzas, use |canto= and |stanza= to specify the canto and stanza numbers in Arabic or uppercase Roman numerals as indicated in the work. Use |section= if quoting from some other division of the work, for example, |section=quadrain 1 (in "Tetrasticha. Or The Quadrains of Guy de Faur, Lord of Pibrac") or |section=sonnet 1 (in "Sonnets upon the (Late) Miraculous Peace in Fraunce").
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the part of the work quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
