Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Vanbrugh and Colley Cibber's work The Provok'd Husband; or, A Journey to London. A Comedy (1st edition, 1728). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books and the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |version=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the unfinished version, specify |version=Journey. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the completed version.
  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters by Cibber in the completed version indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Dedication To the Queen
Epilogue Epilogue. Spoken by Mrs. [Anne] Oldfield.
Prologue Prologue, Spoken by Mr. [Robert] Wilks
To the Reader To the Reader
As the dedication, "To the Reader", and epilogue are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=_NhhAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP11, specify |page=11. (The prologue is also unpaginated, but the template can determine the URL to link to.)
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template determine the act number (I–IV in the unfinished version; I–V in the finished version) quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the completed version, if the page number is specified in most cases the template can determine the act number. However, it is unable to do so if page 18, 37, or 55 is specified, in which case this parameter must be used to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Unfinished version
Act I
pages 5–20
Act II
pages 21–31
Act III
pages 32–42
Act IV
pages 43–51
Completed version
Act I
pages 1–18
Act II
pages 18–37
Act III
pages 37–55
Act IV
pages 55–68
Act V
pages 69–106
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
