Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Izaak Walton's work The Lives of Dr. John Donne, Sir Henry Wotton, Mr. Richard Hooker, Mr. George Herbert (1st edition, 1670, 4 volumes). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=IV.
  • |author= – the name of an author of a chapter other than Walton.
  • |2= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter number quoted from. If quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result First page number
Volume I
Epistle Dedicatory To the Right Honourable and Reverend Father in God George Lord Bishop of Winchester, and Prelate of the Most Noble Order of the Garter unnumbered page
To the Reader To the Reader unnumbered page
Donne The Life of Dr. John Donne, Late Dean of St. Paul’s Church, London page 9
Volume II
Wotton The Life of Sr. Henry Wotton, Sometime Provost of Eaton College page 3
Volume III
Hooker The Life of Mr. Rich[ard] Hooker, the Author of Those Learned Books of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity page 7
Volume IV
Herbert The Life of Mr. George Herbert page 9
As the epistle dedicatory and "To the Reader" in volume I are unpaginated, use |3= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=kofgPVtoUtcC&pg=PP3, specify |page=3.
  • |date= – the date of a chapter other than the year of publication of the work, for example, |date=17 November 1664. The date will be converted from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
