This the declension table template for Ge'ez (Ethiopic) nouns and adjectives, it's powered by Module:gez-decl which can extrapolate full declensions from the nominative/genitive absolute form.

Usage[edit]

The template takes at minimum either:

  • the nominative/genitive (non-accusative) absolute form, which is the first argument.
  • both the masculine and feminine nominative/genitive (non-accusative) absolute forms, marked with m= and f=, respectively.

Other arguments that can be included are:

  • sb=: The base singular form for pronominal suffixes if it differs from normal patterns.
  • asb=: The accusative singular form for pronominal suffixes if it differs from normal patterns.
    • Note: If sb is specified but asb is not, the template will use sb as the base.
  • pl=: The nominative/genitive absolute plural form. This can also be specified as smp or sfp to generate sound (external) regular plural forms.
    • Note: If pl is not included, the plural form is not generated by default as Ge'ez nouns have highly irregular plural forms and defaulting to anything would generate a lot of erroneous forms.
  • pl_sb=, pl_asb=: As above, but for the plural form.
  • pl[2-9]=: Additional plural forms can be specified by appending a number (2 onwards). Pronominal suffix forms for each plural can be specified with pl2_sb, etc.

If masculine and feminine forms are specified, each of the above arguments should be prefixed with m_ or f_, as appropriate (e.g. f_pl_sb=).

Except as specified, all arguments should be in the Ge'ez/Ethiopic script using normal Ge'ez spelling conventions.

Notes[edit]

With the exception of plural forms, the number of irregular declensions in Ge'ez is quite low, typically in biradical formations such as እድ, እኍ, ሐም, or አፍ. Outside of these, the template should be accurate for most Ge'ez nouns and adjectives.

Places for improvement[edit]

  • Ability to specify custom conjunct and accusative forms: This would also allow us to handle the -ሃ accusative suffix used for some personal names, as well as cardinal numbers.
  • Vocative: Ge'ez has a vocative prefix and suffix, which could be handled by this template.
  • Customize transliteration: The Ethiopic script underspecifies the language, not marking gemination, the presence or absence of the vowel in the 6th order, and stress. This could be handled by the ability to customize transliteration (although it may be better to do so via diacritics on the Ethiopic script entries).
